Introduction / History

The Lombi (AKA, Rombi) are a group living in the northeastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Their primary homeland is centered around the Opienge area in Bafwasende Territory. They speak Lombi, a language classified within the Central Sudanic family, linking them to broader linguistic traditions in northeastern Congo.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Lombi live primarily in rural, forest-edge communities where daily life depends on a mix of agriculture, fishing, hunting, and gathering. Villages are often located along transportation routes such as roads or forest paths. Family and community life are closely tied to local leadership structures and is guided by customary leaders and strong family networks. Life is also influenced by ongoing insecurity in some areas. Armed group activity, competition over natural resources, and limited governance have created challenges that affect mobility, safety, and economic stability.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Lombi are primarily Christian. Traditional beliefs remain present in some areas. Concerns related to spiritual forces, including ideas about witchcraft or sorcery, continue to influence how people interpret conflict, illness, and misfortune. Scripture is available in languages accessible to the Lombi, and Christian teaching continues through both local and regional languages.

What Are Their Needs?

Access to clean water, healthcare, and education is limited in many communities due to isolation and underdeveloped infrastructure. Security and protection are also major concerns. Ongoing instability in parts of their region affects safety, limits economic activity, and disrupts normal community life. Efforts to promote peace, fair governance, and community stability are essential. Spiritually, continued growth in understanding Scripture and strengthening local churches is important.
